Family has a way of providing comfort like nobody else can. So when our military and veterans are injured and are recovering, it’s important to offer their family housing nearby.
Randy Lee Ashcraft and his wife Lisa join us on the couches to tell us about something that is near and dear to their hearts – the Fisher House Foundation.
Fisher House offers free lodging to military and veterans family members so they can remain with their loved ones who need specialized medical care at medical centers around the world. Since 1990, Fisher House has served 277,000 military and veteran families. Over 71 Fisher Houses operate around the world and they have provided seven million days of free lodging. Also since 1990, Fisher House has saved families $320 million.
On any given night, up to 950 families could be staying at a Fisher House. The Fisher House creates an instant community for its residents, united by their common mission of supporting a sick or injured loved one, but also provides each individual with a secure and private refuge after a long day at the hospital to rest and recharge. Families lean on each other for support.
Fisher House Foundation has several other major programs:
- Hero Programs—Allows donated frequent flyer miles and hotel points to be used to bring family members to the bedside of injured or ill service members
- Newman’s Own Award—A grant program that supports other military charities
- Scholarships—A grant program that provides scholarships to children and spouses of military families
The community can help give back to our soldiers by attending an upcoming event on Jan. 15 at Johnny’s Pizza and Pub in Ocean City. The event is from 2 pm – 6 pm, $10 at the door, and Randy Lee Ashcraft and other bands will be performing.
If you cannot attend the fundraiser, you can make a donation here.
